Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

  • Nitrous Oxide – Oxygen is a safe, effective technique that our office offers to calm a child’s anxiety. Nitrous Oxide can also be helpful for children whose gag reflex interferes with dental treatment.
  • A blend of two gases is used Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen. The patient breathes the gas mixture through a small nose mask. The effect is mild and your child will remain fully conscious and responsive during the procedure. At the end of the treatment, breathing in pure oxygen eliminates the nitrous oxide from the body and there are no lingering effects.
  • Some children can become nauseous with the use of Nitrous Oxide – Oxygen. In order to minimize this possibility, we ask that your child have an empty stomach for his/her appointment.
  • Your child may have a light meal and/or clear fluids such as apple juice or water up to 2 hours prior to the appointment.
  • Please let us know if your child has any respiratory conditions that may make breathing through the nose difficult as this may limit the effectiveness of Nitrous Oxide – Oxygen. Also, please inform us if your child is taking any medications.
  • Although Nitrous Oxide – Oxygen can be very effective for treatment of children with mild anxiety, this treatment may not be effective for all patients. A review of your child’s medical history, level of anxiety and dental treatment needs will allow you and your dentist to make a decision as to which type of treatment will be most effective for your child.
  • Your Child must be in good health 10 days prior to appointment time. Please inform our office if your child becomes ill, or has flu like symptoms or chest congestion. Always give us 2 business days notice to cancel or reschedule the appointment (to avoid losing your deposit).
