Pre-operative Instructions for Dental Surgery with Sedation

  1. All patients must have a responsible escort over the age of 18
  2. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time
  3. Eating MUST be avoided 8 hours prior to surgery. Clear fluids such as still water, apple juice, and non-carbonated electrolyte drinks are allowed up to 2 hours prior to surgery
  4. Please bring government issued photo identification (Health card or Driver’s Licence)
  5. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing with short sleeves or sleeves that can be easily rolled up above the elbow
  6. Do not apply make-up or cologne the day of surgery. Ensure at least one fingernail on each hand is free of nail polish
  7. Please brush your teeth and rinse thoroughly before surgery
  8. If you normally take medications, you may take them as prescribed unless instructed not
  9. Have ice packs ready at home to reduce swelling and help the process
  10. Smoking and alcohol must be avoided 24 hours prior to surgery and 24 hours after surgery

If you have an illness such as a cold, flu sore throat, or stomach upset, please notify the office as a change in appointment may be necessary

Patients who are well prepared and follow the instructions tend to have a smoother recovery. The following are examples of soft food items that are recommended after surgery:

  • Hearty soups
  • Fruit smoothies, protein shakes
  • Eggs
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Rice, risotto
  • Tofu
  • Apple sauce
  • Fresh cooked vegetables
  • Jell-O
  • Oatmeal, cream of wheat
  • Pasta
  • Yogurt
  • Cottage cheese
  • Popsicles, ice cream
  • Pudding
  • Soft fruits

Patients who are well prepared and follow the instructions tend to have a smoother recovery. The following are examples of soft food items that are recommended after surgery:

  • Spicy foods
  • Hot-to-the-touch foods
  • Hard bread loafs and baguettes
  • Foods that are difficult to chew
  • Potato chips
  • Popcorn

Be sure to rest and have a relaxing recovery. Though it varies greatly for each patient and the types of procedure, you may anticipate one week of recovery to resume normal activities.
